Random Shenmue Thoughts

Okay, I am going for the Fang Mei Birthday Quest in Shenmue II, But I need some help.
- She doesn 't call Ryo, Ryo yet
- I am up to the part where I have t ouse the CHawa Signs in the Tea Shops (Great for Time Skipping)
- I have met both Fang Mei & Eileen at the Man Mo Bistro, I intended to follow Eileen from the Bistro but as soon as she was out, she teleported! Fang Mei was walking outside but Eileen was nowhere to be seen. I went to the shop where you buy the gift in question but no show:
Haha, for an Epic Fail moment! I realised she was there for a brief second but I missed her completely :p Still I will try again tonight :p

On another SideQuest - How do you get Delin to share his move with you? I've been trying to meet him at every story point since the Wharf but even when he is standing at the edge of the Pier, nothing.
- You need to talk more with Fangmei, she has to ask you about 4 different Multiple choice questions everyday.
- Don't do the Chawan Signs at the Blue Sky Beer Garden
- I guess it's too early to follow Eileen, if I remember correctly it starts when Fangmei calls Ryo "Ryo" and closer to February 28th. At the same time, Fangmei will be near Complete Clothier. And I think It's better to wait Eileen outside Man Mo Bistro.

Delin shares his move when Ryo looking for 500$. I didn't have 500$ when was in Beverly Hills Wharf and got the cutscene after the job with Delin in my playthrough on PS4.

Can't say the exact moment but it's available around when you search for ren or when you need to give him money.

No- you need to work the job specifically at the time while you need to get the $500 to meet Ren- in fact that’s why he teaches you the move ? so basically make sure you have less than $500 when you find Cool J at the scrap heap, or Ryo will automatically hand the money over, and you’ll miss out
I always did it before meeting Ren since it makes grinding money out of the mountain man pretty easy.

I hope it's more dependant on working with Delin, because on my save point at that area I already have nearly $1000 from the Yan Ren battles at the Wharf :p

It doesn't necessarily have to be while you're looking for $500, you can do it anytime between being ambushed at Beverly Hills Wharf (you're allowed out once you have to look for $500, so this is why it's common to do it here), and meeting Ren in Pigeon Park.

In my "All Major Sidequests" speedrun I do this after meeting Ren in his warehouse and passing the CQTE - Ren asks you to meet him in Fortune Pier anyway, so that's a good opportunity.

In other words:

You can go to Delin after meeting Ren, as long as you haven't met him in Pigeon Park yet.

Being a devout Shenmue fan it's a given that I live the series but let me put that down for a moment and speak objectively. I'm currently playing Shenmue 1 and working at the harbor.

Objectively speaking if you coated Shenmue 1 with PS4/XBOX graphics thus game could still compete with it's open worlds counterparts. There are some obvious drawbacks: the controls, camera, voice acting. Aside from that this is truly a great game ahead of its time.

Shenmue 1 is not a big game yet Yu Suzuki and his team managed to make a small open world game with lots to do and no repetitive game mechanics or story missions. That in itself is?. This game came out in 1999 and it still manages to beat out other games in the genre.

Here are some highlights I've accomplished with my playthrough that I've never done before.

Won a copy if Hang-On and Space Harrier from Tomato Store Raffle.
Defeated Chai in the You Arcade.
Hang-On cassette from Tomato Raffle.
I hear you on control, if you still play on DC. even emulated you could have fixed the controls to use left stick in Shenmue 1. In the remakes it was done automatically. I still don't know why people complained even with these fixes. He walks, he turns, he runs. Yes he needs to face his NPC to ask something. As if you would ask from the back IRL. The best parts come with free battles. They were and are unique in a game like that. Yet even that I see negative comments on for the 3rd from idiots "it's like in a PS2 game, needs to be sleeping dogs." No skill, press a button, see the fancy 30 million dollar animations.

It gets me mad reading that stuff. I think 1&2, and this 3rd are for a specific type of which there are many, but not for all. Then or now. I love them. Pretty soon gonna replay both. Getting closer now.

There's one scene I can't quite get to trigger but I saw on videos. In Yamanose, there's a scene where you talk to someone on a balcony. Has anyone seen that one?

Just cleared the old Warehouse No.8 stealth section, a couple of new observations:
First off, I cleared the stealth section first time! I remember the first time I did this back on the DC and it took days of in game time to clear it. How times change!

I was playing Excite QTE in the arcade and for the first time I hit "Super Expert" mode. Never knew this difficulty existed but it was cool to see none the less.

Lastly, while caring for the cat over a few weeks I get the scene where the cat is shown to have recovered. What I didn't expect is how the scene played out - instead of the usual scene with Megumi and Nozomi, instead I saw a scene where Yasuo and his sister were caring for the kitten and ran out to Ryo informing him the cat has recovered. Completely different dialogue and no scene with Nozomi either, never seen this before, but was a really cool little scene.

Now back to trying to get a new darts high score... (oh, and find the Phoenix Mirror, that's pretty important as well...)

I’ve never heard of this scene before. Has anyone else or is there a video for this? I swear to god, the amount of optional content and conversations is just mind blowing.

They're two different cutscenes - you get both at different times.

Yasuo and Kayo cutscene at 4:15, Nozomi cutscene at 10:00 (best quality I could find, sorry)

The Yasuo cutscene triggers before you meet Master Chen, the Nozomi cutscene when you're looking for the Phoenix Mirror.

That explains it then, I'm doing a quicker run than usual (as I want to get through 1&2 before 3 is out). As I've said many times before, this game just has so much content that it blows my mind that this is yet another replay where I'm seeing not only new dialogue that fleshes characters out, but brand new cutscenes as well.

I'm still having trouble with the gang mei birthday scene. I'm on Feb 12th but she is still calling Ryo Mr Hazuki. I've got it to the point where her and Eileen are at the cafe. I followed Eileen but she says nothing. And fang mei seems to not automatically asks questios now - I can ask about restaurants but thats about it...

Woo, I now have a cool new Phoenix Mirror, two more things I notice as I continue my playthrough:

I can't help but wonder why so much stuff is seemingly hidden in the basement. It makes sense to hide away the Phoenix Mirror of course but some of the antiques, move scrolls and documents... I wonder why they were all hidden down there (even Ryo questions while certain things were placed down there). Almost makes me wonder if something really bad went down while over in China and Iwao hid the evidence of it all... well I think 3 is supposed to shed some light into what went down in the past, so hopefully some questions get answered. The leaf is really strange.

The other thing is, I love how Ryo's personality is portrayed through his body language - when handling items (especially around the Dojo when looking for the Phoenix mirror) you always see him carefully picking up/putting down/handling items - rather than through the sheath of the sword to the floor, or the scrolls he very carefully places them down on the ground in a neat manor. Likewise when placing things back on shelves or checking scrolls you see him carefully placing them on shelves, rolling up the scroll etc. plus with the Phoenix Mirror box you have him carefully retrieve it, and open the box. I just really love how they show his careful and disciplined side in these little animations.

I finally made it to Hong Kong in my slow replay of 1&2. ?
It's also the first time I've played the dreamcast version of 2 and I've got to say carrying over your save was way less of a big deal than I though it would be lol.

I also didn't expect them to introduce furigana into the notebook, but it sure is helpful with all the Chinese names showing up now.

The saddest part of my replays has been the fact that no matter how much time has passed since I last played them I just know these games too well to really forget that much so its easy to zoom through, advancing the story and not really appreciating the minutiae and random open world aspects. That being said, its also one of the things that is driving up my excitement for Shenmue 3. In a couple short weeks I'll not only be able to help Ryo continue his search in a new world, but more importantly I'll get to experience that world in a pure and genuine way once again. Its like we all have a ticket back to our childhood and the train leaves on November 19th.

I watched your stream and if I remember correctly Fangmei asks only 3 or 4 multiple choices questions per a day, that's why she ask nothing after that. You need about 12 questions (3-4 days) if your answers are good. She never asks questions at Man Mo Bistro. + I think she doesn't initiate dialogues, cause you always very close to her.
You got only five questions:
1) Do you know the restaurant near Man Mo Park? Yes
2) What do you think about the Master? Yes
3) What do you think about the Master? Strong
4) Why did you come to Hong Kong? Talk
5) Are you having any problems? Room
-
6) What are you likes and dislikes? Meat
7) What is your favorite Japanese dish? Steak
8) I could be like Master Tao? You can
9) Do you remember about the restaurant near Man Mo Park? Man Mo Bistro
10) Have you made any friends here? Fangmei
11) Are you getting used to Hong Kong yet? Pretty much
12) I'm sure you're getting pretty used to it by now. - Got used to
What do you like about this city? People

After all those questions and answers she started to call Ryo "Ryo" in my playthrough.

Thanks for the response :) I went back to a nolder save and think I may have answered a few wrong, would that mean there is no chance - She doesn't seem to offer any of them options anymore and still doesn't call me Ryo.

There are a lot of questions, I'm not sure how much, but definitely more than 20. Consequently, I think it's not a big problem if you have answered a few wrong.

Im upset because the game make me miss more than 2 in game hours for no reason when going to work at the harbor.

How by entering the traiding office at 13h15 I then try the forklift at 15h40 ? Couldn't have I tried it at 13h40 ?
Or 14h00 if you want to take into account the noon break. Even more baffling when the supervisor ask me if I can work right away...

I know the feeling when it comes to knowing exactly where to go/what to do. I had the same issue on Shenmue 1 at the moment so I actively challenge myself to talk to different characters/try to find different ways to the next plot point. Works out pretty well thanks to the gargantuan amount of dialogue in the game, and lets me see some brand new scenes while I'm at it!

Just lose the fight at Man Mo Park and you're golden ;)

EDIT* I'll add, you're golden *at this point*; Duck can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you DO need to talk to her a bit, in order to get her to soften up and then the Man Mo Park fight just busts her shell open. If you don't talk to her beforehand and just lose the fight, even though she calls you Ryo-San, I don't believe she builds up enough rapport to do her bday event.
