Random Shenmue Thoughts

I've been doing four hour days (eight hours on weekends) for a few weeks now, looking at starting Kowloon on Wednesday or Thursday. I think I'm doing a good pace, and I want to start Shenmue III the instant I finish Shenmue II so it's like there was no two decade delay at all.

Im starting Shenmue 2 today. Focusing just on the story I should be able to get through it pretty quick (1 took no time at all to clear). Just means less Death Stranding playtime (which is a pity as I'm loving that game as well!)

Ok, started Shenmue 2 this afternoon and there's one small thing that instantly stands out to me - I love (LOVE!) how more lively Hong Kong and its restaurants seem feels in comparison to Dobuita - Its not just the NPC count but rather the fact that you have more of them in shops, eating etc. (and with actual food in front of them, and they are eating). Its just a really small touch that goes a long way to making things more realistic.
Other than that, trying to learn all the new inputs for my favourite moves and playing lots of lucky hit (which I've not really put much time into before). Loving it!

Replaying Shenmue II but this time as Joy just for fun, quite interesting experience actually.

How long do you need to play through both Shenmue-Games?

Edit: The shortest. :-)

So doing all the Chawan stuff at the moment in 2... I ended up with a really good conversation with Joy about Master Chen, Zhu Yuanda and her father. I've somehow missed this conversation until now.
Just trying to get the Fangmei Frying Pan scene (though she's gone MIA so doubt it'll occur)....

One thing that bothers me though, is that some NPCs definitely don't seem to follow a normal path but rather seem to teleport into the area I'm in. One old geezer was practically stalking me for part of the game so far!

So... anyone seen the new trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie? They really redeemed themselves with the redesign.

Anyway the Sega logo they used is constructed as a mosaic of Sega game footage. I was curious if this acknowledges you know what and I found it quite easily. See for yourself if you can spot where it is and what they used. :D

Well, this happened today:

The only 1CC I'm likely to get unless I can figure out how to clear the penultimate stage of Hang On. Really pleased with this! Now at the end of disc 2 on Shenmue 2, pretty much ready to head to Kowloon. On track to get this done ready for Shenmue 3's release.

according to howlongtobeat.com

roughly

19.5hours for shenmue 1
25hours for shenmue 2
or
37.5 hours for both games

(im trying to complete both games in 6 days )

Yes, and yes. The only things you can't train in the park are the throws. You just can't throw him any. Exit area, reenter ask him, spar, exit enter. You can train all kicks and punches in a few hours. Throws you could max after the game is cleared in the collections fighting unlocked guys. Though as you know, no point for the 3rd one at all. You'll spar there like in Shenmue 2, it's as if you know nothing again. So just max what you love using.
Good info. Just gonna add some more to this:

Sparring with Jiamin is a great place to strengthen arm & leg moves early in the game.
Every 2 times you execute a move it'll increase in strength by a sliver. This is much less of a hassle than Shenmue 1 where it would take 10 reps to strengthen a move (20 reps if the move was Moderate-level). Also, if a move has multiple button presses in it (ex.Tornado Kick) you only have to do the first part of the move for it to be strengthened. Doing the additional inputs (ex. the second kick of the Tornado Kick) does not add to your count, so just do the first part.

One sparring session with Jiamin lasts 1 real-life minute (which is 10 in-game minutes).
Once sparring ends, if you immediately talk to Jiamin again he won't ask if you want to spar. To get him to ask you again you'll have to do one of two things:
The long way = exit the South Carmain Qr. (the closest exit is the Green Market Qr. to the northeast), re-enter it, and then speak to Jiamin again.
The quick way = after a sparring session save your game (standing near Jiamin), quit, and then re-load it. After you load the game you can immediately talk to Jiamin and he'll ask if you want to spar. This method saves you a lot of in-game minutes that you'd waste leaving and re-entering South Carmain Qr.

Other Stuff:
--The Moves Scroll in Shenmue 2 is a lot less detailed. There's no white-color that will show you how much you've strengthened a move after a sparring session. Also the color of the strength bar doesn't change as a move reaches "Moderate" or "Advanced" level.
--I haven't maxed-out all of my moves yet but I haven't noticed any of Ryo's moves changing in animation once they're at the Moderate level. That's a damn shame because that was one of the cooler things about Shenmue 1.
--You can strengthen Throws by using them in Free Battles. Each time you perform a throw it'll increase in strength by a few slivers. Again this is much, MUCH less of a hassle than it was in Shenmue 1. I was able to max-out Arm Break Fire really early in my game (my Shenmue 1 data carrying over + free battle w/Sam & Larry + free battle at Yan Tin Apartments = maxed out Arm Break Fire. I did about 27 reps in that last fight; you only have to do the Forward,Back,Back+Throw part of Arm Break Fire to strengthen it).
--Lastly, keep this in mind if you're taking a lot of time trying to strengthen Throws in a Free Battle: if you fight for longer than 1 in-game hour (6 real-life minutes) Ryo's life will start to quickly deplete and once it empties he'll collapse and you'll lose the fight. So don't fight for too long.

Going to test if running quick to the pawnshop, then exiting will respawn a spar option. Not only closer than Green market exit, but less loading than the Qr, plus Shen2 introduced load-free shop exiting from one-room places (and if within a decent amount of real-time?) EDIT: most small shops.

Moves in general improved a LOT faster in Shen2.

Talking about "load free" enter and exit of area, Im in the harbor of shenmue yokosuka now and one thing I really like is that warehouses, alpha trading office and restaurant, have no loading screen and the interior load on the fly as you enter, I wonder why they couldn't do it on others locations.

Good point, maybe because they are relatively sparsely detailed interiors (although same could be said for some of the interiors or shops in Dobuita).another point to consider was lack of NPC activity in those rooms in theharbour going in and out of those locations compared to citizens in Doubita with much more detailed schedules.

Oh, you're jogging my memory and sounds right! Good catch, edited my post above to note your two exceptions in ch1.

I tried that almost immediately because I REALLY wanted that to work versus having to exit the Qr. but it didn't work for me. However give it another shot and see if you get different results.
Once I found the save, quit, reload method I stuck with that. I try to save up every minute since I'm sparring all day untill 11pm (I'm passing time for March 3rd).

Damn--I believe you. Hadn't gotten around to powering on my Dreamcast the last few days. Been busy working some extra hours before my mini-staycation for Shenmu 3 beginning Monday :D

LOL I play 1&2 on SSD on PC. At times the black screen has no time to show up. So even that old design on the newest tech is better.
