Random Shenmue Thoughts

I was watching one of @BlueMue Shenmue 1 videos a few days ago and I saw a free battle I've never seen before. It was against Akio Enoki and Tetsuya Nagashima behind some apartments at night with about 3 or 4 more guys. How do you trigger this fight sequence?

If memory serves me correctly you obviously have to fight him in optional fight defending Nozomi and then after you meet Charlie at tattoo parlour you can find him behind apartments and have group fight.

Provided you have already had the fight with Enoki and Nagashima in Sakuragaoka Park on the day after throwing down at the Heartbeats Bar; the same day you receive the letter from Ine-san and have the fight with Charlie and his goons in Sakuragaoka, head to the courtyard of Wakaba Apartments (if you take the entrance to Dobuita by Yamagashi-san's house, turn right instead of left and follow the path) after 7pm and you will find Enoki and his gang.

EDIT: Just remembered, this fight only occurs on disc one. If you go to the Harbour before the fight, you lose access to it.

is the Japanese version of Shenmue HD no longer available for PC?
i was thinking about getting it so i was looking on steam and it says japanese subtitles and interfaces aren't supported.

Japanese language support is still technically available, you just have to do a couple little workarounds. The first game can be set to Japanese with the config file, but Shenmue II you pretty much have to edit the exe with a hex editor. That's what I did, anyway. The details were in a thread somewhere in the mods section of the forum, I'm pretty sure.

What game would you want to play for the first time again?

The @datadiscs Shenmue 1 LP restock is now live!

I'm glad Shenmue was released on the Dreamcast. When looking at the Saturn footage side by side with the Dreamcast footage its no contest.
I wish there was a playable build or even script for the game unearthed at some point, just to see how much was changed in the span of a few years. One thing that immediately springs to mind is the location of the entrance to the Hazuki Residence Basement.

Do you think Shenmue would have had as big of a impact if it had released on the Saturn?

This will probably never happen but 🤬 it Ima put out there anyway. If Yu Suzuki is able to finish the Shenmue series ill always be eternally grateful. Beyond that though there is still opportunities to continue to make Shenmue titles.

I would love to see a Shenmue 0 game based on Iwao Hazuki journey to China and befriending Suming Zhao and Yuan da Zhu. I would also love to see a Yakuza X Shenmue game. I don't think it would happen cause there is some tension there for some reason(I know this topic has been beat to death).

Lastly, imagine if Sega made a rpg game similar to Kingdom Hearts except you vist worlds that take place in the Sega universe. This could be a lot of fun but I don't think it will happen because you know its Sega. Is there a representative for Sega? Someone will could bounce ideas off of?

Back in 2015, I floated a Sega Brawler in the vein of Power Stone/SSB/PFAS in a series of top 10s, on Gamefaqs.

Basically, I picked 20 characters, 10 items (weapons or whatever) and 10 locations from Sega Canon (EXCLUDING the Sonic franchise, as there would obviously be representation from that series and the selections would all be #1 anyways), to be included in said game.

It boiled down to:

Locations:

10. Kazarne: Super Fantasy Zone
9. Kogane-Cho- JSR Series
8. Turtle Village- Golden Axe
7. Paperock- Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
6. Kamurocho- Yakuza Series
5. Village of Zoah- PDS
4. The City- SoR Series
3. Splash Garden- NiGHTS Into Dreams...
2. Yokosuka Harbour
1. The Comic Book- Comix Zone

9. Key (sword)- Clockwork Knight Series
8. Golden Gun- Sega Golden Gun

5. Pipe- SoR Series
4. Spray Cans- JSR Series
3. Shurikens- Shinobi Series
2. 16T Bomb- Fantasy Zone Series
1. Golden Axe- Golden Axe Series

My lists may not be absolute perfection, but it's a good starting point! ;)

Looks good to me but you know...Sega😓

Do you think Shenmue would have had as big of a impact if it had released on the Saturn?
I have no doubt it, much like the Shenmue we ended up getting, would have been praised for its ambition and scope, but I'm going to go with no, on the basis that the technology required to do the series justice simply wasn't there at the time. Do we even know what year the Saturn version of Shenmue was supposed to be released? 1996? 1997? 1998? In any case, there is no way in hell the Saturn was going to put even a dent in the PlayStation, hence why bringing the series to the next generation of consoles was essential, not just for the technological upgrades necessary to justify Yu Suzuki's vision, but the "wow" factor, too.

The first two games didn't live up to sales expectations, but I imagine they would have done a darn sight worse had they released on the Saturn.

I think It's the first game, since at the time, I didn't know it wasn't a one off/stand alone game(I didn't have a sega magazine sub). The ending of the 1st game is mind blowingly profound when you come to the realization that what you just went though, was literally nothing but a prelude.

Shenmue was originally supposed to be Virtual Fighter RPG. Whats made Yu Suzuki switch everything over to what we know as Shenmue today?
