Random Shenmue Thoughts

Shenmue was originally supposed to be Virtual Fighter RPG. Whats made Yu Suzuki switch everything over to what we know as Shenmue today?
Because it would've taken 50 CDs lol(no, that's not a typo). Crazy visionary Yu Suzuki didn't think far enough ahead/understimated the Saturn's coding issues. Just as well though, because it lead to even better versions of his vision.

Virtual Fighter RPG was Shenmue 1, and 2 combined, plus the Saturn was a nightmare to code for.

Higher ambition for the game than would be possible to pull off considering the constraints and parameters presented by an established series, perhaps?

I think it was VFRPG only in the earliest concepts. As the story got developed in transformed into Shenmue. It was Shenmue as early as Saturn so this was established early on.

I think this is Suzuki illustrating if they had expanded it like they did on Dreamcast with full VA etc without the compression.

While that's not impossible due to the timing he made that statement, I do believe he was refering to what was already the Saturn game.

VF RPG was technically done, so if it were plausible to sell to the public, they would've probally made it a multi platform release, atleast in Japan anyway(Saturn was crazy popular in Japan after all)

it was done? If you are referring to the Saturn version of Shenmue it was only half done (story wise) as they had only gotten up to Guilin.

Shenmue pivoted to the DC because Sega realized the Saturn was failing and wanted to launch a new console. Makes sense to release your "killer app" on the latest hardware

VF RPG game was going to end in gulin, specifically when reaching Bailu, like in Shenmue 2 within the cave on the DC or otherwise her house, so the game was pretty close to finished. The whole storyline was never going to be in a single/junst 2 games.

The Saturn was only a failure outside of Japan, and not only was it not a failure in Japan, it wasn't in the process of failing either. Hell the DC was originally going to be 100% BC with the Saturn(sigh it would've been so awesome if that happened), but sadly Sega of America killed that idea, becaused Sega of America doomed the Saturn in the firstplace, and didn't want a system that sold so poorly hery to increase the cost of the DC.

As always, I don't mean to bag on people, but I must: where in God's name do you come up with this crap?

When I said end, I don't mean the end of the entire storyline. Naturally there would need to be more VF RPG games. With how the storyline was structured at the time, It probally would've took 4 entries, although I bet Yu Suzuki was hoping to do it in 3, to create a nicely packaged trilogy(Also 3 is a lucky number in Asia).

Here's something random - a homemade Shenmue OST I made all the way back in 2002 as a 17 year old. I think I picked some pretty good tracks !

Sega intends to "aggressively" port games to Steam and other new platforms following the success of Persona 4 Golden's PC port, which launched in June of this year.

As reported by GamesIndustry.Biz, Sega's latest investor Q&A underlined the sales performance of Persona 4 Golden on Steam, which was "significantly higher than expected." The company has said that this will help govern its approach towards porting its older games onto new platforms.

"Going forward, we intend to aggressively promote the porting of previously launched titles to Steam and other new platforms," Sega explained. "Under such direction, we would like to take multi-platform rollout in account and prepare the PC version and others from the start."

Could be good news for the Switch port? Or not...
