Random Shenmue Thoughts

Extremely random thought, but do you guys ever wonder about the events that take place just before Shenmue I's intro?

When the scene opens, despite Ryo not being present at the Dojo, he clearly knows something is wrong as he's running up the road with a look of concern on his face. I sometimes wonder why Ryo wasn't home and how he knew that something bad was going on back at the Dojo.

One of my theories is that Iwao knew Lan Di was coming on that day and that Ryo (being protective of his father) would try to get in his way. Given that it was Ryo's birthday and a Saturday, maybe Iwao sent him into town to celebrate with friends in order to protect him from Lan Di. As for the rush back, perhaps Ryo saw the unusual black car driving recklessly through Dobuita and towards Yamanose, giving him a bad feeling and prompting him to rush home and ensure things were alright.

It's totally irrelevant to the story, but I still think it's interesting to think about!

It would be really cool if the upcoming anime opened on the morning of that day and showed us the full events of how it all unfolded.

Interesting thought, this is one of the reasons why i think it would be nice to have a game Shenmue Zero. Yeah, would be really cool if the anime showed us the full events of how it all unfolded.

Very interesting to think about and something that I always wondered. Because don't forget during a scene with Nozomi and the kitten that she mentions how now he always says nothing and that he doesn't tell her anything anymore. Implying that before Iwaos death he was much more open to his close friends. I believe that back in the day it may have been confirmed or just assumed that he was either retuning home from school or that he hung out with his friends before heading home.

I believe Shenmue: The Movie is edited in a way that shows him hanging out with his friends, it doesn't begin with the opening cutscene. I'm not sure if that's canonical though.

I always thought that the original outline of Shenmue, and possibly the Saturn version, started a little earlier. Showing Ryo's normal life for a bit rather than opening with Iwao's death. Pros and cons to each approach but I think this is something the anime could explore a little, maybe end the first episode with Iwao's death rather than start it.

Data Discs opened pre-orders for Shenmue 2 soundtrack on vinyl!
Track list is a little bit dissapointed. There is no "Waves Of Morning Haze". :(

Had a feeling it wouldn't make it. I wonder if its down to licencing issues with the Orchestra Tracks? No Orchestra Tracks made either LP which is a god damn shame as the Orchestra tracks are easily some of the best in both games. So I wonder if its licencing issues or something?

Oh well, I still put down an order for both Shenmue II LP and the Slipcase to house both LP's in.

probably saving the Orchestral tracks for when they can reprint this and get another twenty quid out of us

I just found out in SII that when you have to look for Yuan if instead of talking with the blind guy you keep asking for Yuan people tell you go to a knife seller and then he sends you to the birdshop. Quite cool.

I just realized the other day that one of my favorite "new" tracks from Shenmue III was already in Shenmue II during the cutscene in which Shenhua wakes up to find Ryo practicing Tai Chi.

The instrumentation is different, though. I'm pretty sure there was more than one track in Shenmue III that shared that melody, also.

Yes, of course the instrumentation is different and they played around with it a bit when they converted it to a Dreamcast MIDI file to make it fit the scene that it was used for. But the track used in Shenmue III is clearly the basis for the music that plays during that cutscene, which surprised me when I recently realized that.

Is there more than one track that uses that melody? Like how there are two different versions of The Place Where the Sun Sets? It wouldn't shock me, but I'd need to play Shenmue III again to know for sure.

EDIT: Ah, you were correct! Here's the other track:

South Carmain Qr is an amazing track. I found myself randomly humming it a couple weeks and have since been listening to it when it pops into my head. It's such unusual sounds and composition.
