Who actually likes shenmue 3?

Well, as much as we love the series it's kinda hard to look past Shenmue 3 many faults. For me personally it's not on a previous games level at all. Magic has gone, we have to take nostalgia glasses off and admit it.
This game is A 5/10. I have no words for the sorry excuse of a story and characters this had. I could've come up with something more compelling

This is the only place where a few of us discuss as we feel is the greatest series ever but half of you nit pick everything even though this was on a budget.

I liked it but the combat was shit.
I loved it but the ending was shit.
I enjoyed it but it had too much grinding.

Lets try and stay positive because this is a continuation of a brilliant game we wont ever see again.
For those who finished the game, did you happen to read 'The story continues' ?

Preach haha. I agree man. Honestly I'm here waiting for more good threads to happen, because I know its coming up.

There are issues with the game but its not for us to worry about or try to fix. That's a burden for the creators to worry in our stead. All we can really do as an audience is enjoy what is there. Point out the issues and move on from those issues.

I'm one of the people who love this game and I want to discuss so many of the cool little things. Like the hidden Choubu figures, I did not expect all the cool variations. In gameplay, they ask you to explore all the little nooks and crannies. I already enjoy just looking at all the well textured stuff in the game but now I get rewarded for it. Its genius. It made me smile and love the game even more I love it haha.

I've just deleted my text. I just can't write such bad things about the game because I love the Shenmue series too much. There are a lot of things I criticize but I just can't write all of them down.

Just a few words. I didn't like the the story. It was pretty boring for me. It had so much potential. I'm angry about the Ending. Red Snakes a joke. Felt never threaten during the game.

Like said before magic has gone... It couldn't pick up the magic from the games before. The Story had so much potential and turned into a boring standard story.

The game environment is great and I enjoyed it.

-Stamina System is not my cup of tea.
-too many arcades and mini games
-no new interesting characters
-npcs were all boring
-too many identical shops

I've just finished my first run. Maybe my view will change after the second run in with japanese dubs.

Greetings

I LOVED it and the only disappointment for me was that the story was very repetitive and ending was... Eh.

I can see what they where going for with the story, making Ryo improve in Kung Fu. And for the most part it was very cozy learning about the characters and training. But they should have presented it in more ways than the one they kept using. "Hey thug can't be beaten... Go train and come back".

Other than that it's actually my GOTY because it was an amazing experience. The game pulled me in like no other game has done this year. Even after finishing the story I keep wanting to turn on the game to work towards the trophies and I rarely care about doing that but I find S3s gameplay loop to be very comfy and relaxing.

I liked Bailu village. The dialogue tree you'd get most nights with Shenhua was something I really looked forward to.

Did I like Shenmue 3 the game? Absolutely. Yu and his team took a lot of the great elements of the first two and gave me a game I was happy to spend well over a week playing at a casual, relaxed pace. For the 5000 yuan I happily grinded away on the forklift rather than rush through by gambling.

Shenmue 3 the story, not so much. The sparse progress is well-mentioned on the forum and doesn't need repeating.

If there is to be a IV then I think they need to re-assess their priorities and place much more focus on developing the story and the characters, even if it means shrinking areas and/or cutting out shops/casinos etc.

Same. They were the most polite thugs we've met so far.

Yanglang (idk if he's a red snake or a chiyoumen member but I'm guessing the former) lets Shenhua carry an unconscious Ryo away without harming her. She then deceives him and causes him to get hit in the face and the thug doesn't touch her after knocking out Ryo again.

Muscles just throws you out of his warehouse after beating you up and he lets you crawl out of there after the second beating. Do Niu and Yuan tried to kill you when you set foot on their turf. Terry tried to murder you and Guizhang for meddling with the Mad Angels. The heavens gave Ryo a worse beating than anything he received in 3.

I'm a devout Shenmue fan so without question there was no way I wasn't gonna like Shenmue 3. Allow me to put that aside for the moment and speak objectively. I give Shenmue 3 a 6/10. Even though I scored the game low I am satisfied with the end product. There are just elements that I'm not fond of and quite frankly don't understand why they are in the game.

I'll start with what I like about the game.
The visuals are quite good. There are some NPCs that look a little rough but overall the visuals are impressive.

Immersion, thos game is very immersive but at this point we should never expect anything less from a Shenmue game. The arcade games are fantastic, finding the Chobu chan figures are very satisfying, the king fu training sessions are nice, the jobs are fun as well.

Now for the things I didn't like. The combat IMO is not enjoyable. I would've preferred if all fight were QTEs instead of the new combat system.

QTEs, the QTEs are difficult to execute. Most the time I had to fail a QTE sequence several times just to memorize the inputs.

Repetitiveness, one of the things I always appreciated about the Shenmue games was that as a small scale game it never felt repetitive. I was surprised to see Shenmue 3 use some repetitive story progression. There is some bad guys that Ryo can't beat but if he spends alot of money and learns one move he can now beat them. The first time it happened wasn't a problem but to do it a second time and have to spend even more money was just frustrating and made me for a certain part of the game not even care.

Gambling, earning tokens instead of money and then buying random prizes and then taking those prizes to a pawn shop to finally get cash was annoying. Just give me money. The money you receive from working is way to low.

Rock, paper, scissors face was just dumb. Please never do this again.

I dont like the stamina/ health system.

I know you'll read this and think that I didn't enjoy the game but that's not true. Overall I had a great time and in many ways Shenmue 3 could've been my favorite but there were some elements I didnt like. This game was made on a budget so it's hard to be very critical. Looking at what we for 10 million I'm very happy.

SIDENOTE

After finally beating the game this game felt rushed and incomplete. I was under the impression that Niao Sun was the main bad guy of the game and we would be facing off against her. We didnt see her till the end, we gave her the mirror, she burnt down the castle and that's that.

Also we fight Lan Di for 15 sec, get beat easily, Ren throws fake Phoenix mirror out the window, Lan Di stares very long out the window and Ren and Ryo escape burning castle slowly.

Is this really the full story that Yu Suzuki wanted to tell. It feels rushed and incomplete. If Shenmue came out back in 04- 05 is this the game we would've recieved?

Loved it. I think its just as good as Shenmue 1 but not better than Shenmue 2. Sure it was lacking in certain areas and certain points of the game could have been directed better, but overall i was more than happy with it.

I'm probably one of the few who didnt mind the ending that much either. I put over 100 hours into my first playthrough as i was trying to do everything, so i wasn't too affected when it came to the castle. I'll probably do a full write up at some point about my thoughts. Pros/cons etc.

Great game though. The hysterical, outraged lot who want to attack and rip everything down because they didnt get their own way, i'll never understand. Complete madness if you ask me and you cant help but lol at some of those comments.

Overall though, I'd give the game a 8.5/10. I was addicted to it

Bailu was definitely the better of the two areas though.

Terry tried to murder you and Guizhang for meddling with the Mad Angels. The heavens gave Ryo a worse beating than anything he received in 3.

I do have to wonder though if they were supposed to be under orders from Niao Sun not to kill you though. I know, I know, the game never says that and it's a long stretch on my behalf...but it's the only answer I have...maybe they were under orders not to kill you.

To Dou Niu, Ryo was just a pest that was "friends" with another pest that was in his way.

Same thing with Terry. You were just a pest standing in his way.

So the only answer I have for these guys not killing you is that they were under orders to rough you up but not kill. They have no investment in this. They're simply paid thugs being paid to deliver a mirror to their employee. I know, that's a REAL long stretch considering the game NEVER mentions it, but I did have to wonder...that was my thought while playing...and I was almost disappointed we didn't get that throw away line to explain it.

It's the only answer I have as to why they didn't just kill Ryo...and even then, I know there is nothing in the game to suggest it and it's just me pulling a theory out of my ass.

I wrote a review for it...I won't post it here though...but I'm kind of with you. (still waiting to see if Switch wants to post it or not)

I landed somewhere around 8 in my mind. I loved playing the game...yeah I have some misgivings with the story but on second playthrough, I think now that my expectations are gone I'm enjoying it more so. There is a melancholy about it that I quite like...especially in some of those moments with Mr Sun and Master Feng as you talk briefly about Iwao. I don't know...I like the game quite a bit. Even with my shortcomings.

There's more going for this game then people are really giving it credit for...even the fighting is pretty damn decent once you get the groove of it. I don't know, I just really enjoy playing this game about the same as I enjoyed the other two. Feels like a solid continuation to me.

I just like hanging out in this world...for whatever reason...that and I love the spirit is still here...it still aims to be a grand martial arts epic unlike any other that is doing things his way...for better or worse, it's his vision that he is seeing through...and I applaud him for that. I applaud him for having the balls to stick with his vision...for better or worse.

I do wonder though...how many were playing with the English dub? I've only been playing with the Japanese dub and I feel it makes a hell of a lot of difference as to how I received the game...it doesn't fix the problems but it does change the presentation and make the presentation a lot better.

I beat the game yesterday and it is easy to get hooked up on the obviously rushed old castle part. The game had me invested though, for more hours than I put into most games. I feel that Shenmue III does show that there is a place for the Shenmue series in today's gaming landscape. I will play Red Dead Redemption 2 in a few days but in comparison I expect it to be following the western open world standard with a more massive, beautiful looking but relatively non-dense and shallow world, in comparison with e.g. Yakuza that grew into one of my favourite series over time. (Although the main story of the first RDR was really great.) Shenmue is obviously closer to Yakuza than western style open world, but goes in a more calm and investigative direction, as wanted and expected. I will surely be there to play any future entries, if they are made. I kind of also feel satisfied that we at least moved on from the cave ending in part II. It won't be as big of a hit if no more games are made now.

For me I guess it is two parts with Shenmue III; what I was able to play now and then everything else around it. The game turned out in-line with or slightly above my expectations overall. With regards to everything else, after the few first days of the Kickstarter, culminating in that I, as of today, have received very little on top of the base digital game despite being a higher tier backer, has been frustrating.

Love it. Very satisfied with the game I backed. The glorified bloggers of the gaming press and unemployed YouTube reactionaries feigning outrage on my behalf can go fuck themselves.

Playing a game like Shenmue 3 that I've been waiting years for just makes me realise how many games I've played in-between 2 & 3 that I've either tolerated, mildly enjoyed but rarely ever loved.

Since I played the game with low expectations I was kind of surprised with overall quality of the game. That said, I think my only complaint is that , with a lower budget, They should had focus more on the story and characters, than on all the side stuff (mini-games, the amount of shops, etc...), because to a lot of us we play the game for the story!

I give it a 7.5 out of 10 ducks.

I’m very negative on the game but there were elements that I liked:

- the visual design, especially considering the budget, did an excellent job feeling like a continuation of the previous games
- Niaowu especially at night looks beautiful
- Ryo obeying the “no running” sign
- the nightly interactions with Shenhua
- Iwao’s message at the shrine
- the actual fighting in the game was a nice compromise and by far the most fun I had with the game
- almost everything about Lan Di except the 3 stooges
- learning the hip check from a drunk
- the notebook was much improved
- almost all of the new music meets the extremely high quality standard of the series
- Shenmue 3 was actually released and we might see the end to this story
- nothing happened that “broke” the story, so while I didn’t care for the story being told, it didn’t ruin the overall plot
- Ren’s reintroduction was perfect and not treated with any fanfare. Felt like no time had passed because for these characters, it hasn’t
- Ryo continuing to be effortlessly attractive to every female in the game and completely oblivious to that fact

“We” don’t have to do anything. Speak for yourself I loved the game. You don’t get to speak for anyone. And just because you “feel” that other people just like the game because of some sort of nostalgia-denial doesn’t make it real.

I loved it, it had storytelling flaws and poor character development, but it FELT Shenmue.
The last hour, however. I really wish didn't exist... absolutely awful.
I don’t understand this? The last hour had the biggest story progression of the whole game. I wish the inverse. I wish more had led up to this last part. I didn’t care for the pawn shop thing, but the rest I loved.
