General RGG Discussion

i'm looking forward to Yakuza 7. i think Kiryu and the other main characters had enough story arcs.
i want to see something fresh. new friends, new enemies, new towns, new voices.
i really hope the Yakuza dev crew ignores the fan suggestions,
otherwise we will probably get another three games with Kyriu and Majima and i'm not really interested in that.

I heard rumors of another Yakuza prequel in the works but I’d want one about Kazama of being an OG Yakuza in the 60s or 70s and how it leads him to killing Kiryuu’s parents
I don't know that it should bother anymore with Kazuma or his parents or any of that (it's all been told, it's all done; leave Kazuma behind), but I absolutely love the idea of a Yakuza game based in the 60s or 70s. I've honestly been wishing for that for a long time. Most of my favorite yakuza films are from those particular decades.
I'd be pretty happy with a game all about Kazama, especially if they actually made him look like a young Tetsuya Watari (his voice actor) from Tokyo Drifter or the Outlaw Gangster movies.

My freakin mind would be blown. Even more if they also licensed the likenesses of other popular actors of the time, the way Capcom did with Yusaku Matsuda in Onimusha 2. If I ever get to see the likenesses of Bunta Sugawara or Akira Kobayashi rendered in a Yakuza game, I'll lose my shit.

It's all just wishful thinking, obviously, but man, what a world that would be.

Wait, that is the ovoice actor for kazama!? Tokyo Drifter is a great movie. Still not in my Japanese Criterion library, but should be...!

If we get another prequel my two choices would be one showing the forming of the Tojo Clan, or one that focuses on Kazama in his youth (though I do wonder if the team would ever do this, since he wasn't exactly a paragon of virtue in his youth!)

For now though, I'm just content with the remaster of 3 for the PS4. I've been playing it non stop since last week, loving it so much. Its a nice step up from the PS3 version thanks solely to the res boost. Though having the frame rate boosted to 60FPS sure helps, its so darn smooth. I'm also loving revisiting some of my favourite side stories. 100%ing the game is going to be nuts though, Pool and the batting cages remain my main stumbling blocks...

Personally, I kind of feel like that's exactly what they need.
As much as I like Kazuma as an action character, he is in absolutely no way a realistic one. For some reason he's always defaulted to this role of the weirdly-virtuous hero for everyone to look up to... even though the first game literally begins with him doing a collections run and beating the shit out of the client. It's established that he's a violence-prone gangster, and yet the stories themselves (the main narratives) usually gloss over that fact in favor of portraying him as some sort of righteous defender of everything good. It really doesn't make a whole helluva lot of sense.
Mainstream storytelling in Japan nowadays seems to have a problem with the actual bad guys being protagonists, even though Japan used to be top of the heap with that stuff (just look at almost ANY yakuza film from the 90s or earlier). The ONE thing I really didn't like about Yakuza 0, for example, was the weird insistence that neither Kazuma nor Majima have ever killed anyone. I feel like, in the grand scheme of the entire series, that was actually a bit of a retcon.

So yeah, I'd be all for it if they ever did a game where the protagonist is actually a gangster and a criminal, more in the vein of the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series or something. It doesn't have to be GTA, obviously, and of course the character should be a bit of a gray area type of gent (not a psychopath or anything), but he doesn't need to be, as you put it, a paragon of virtue. Kazama might be pretty great for that.

Plus, maybe fleshing out a relationship with his twin brother would be beneficial. Have to say, that always struck me as one of the dumbest, most soap opera-esque twists in the entire series. But if they fleshed it out in a prequel game, it might make the whole deal float a little better. Just a thought.

Good points. Its kinda annoying that they don't have main characters that are more morally grey at times - Majima in 0 for example while I love his story, its annoying to see the number of "what happened to Majima in Kiwami" when the real question is why was he not shown as a bit more evil in 0, as that's the one game that makes him pretty out of character compared to the rest of the series. Kinda why I just love Dead Souls, because we got proper crazy Majima in that, its the highlight of the game for me, even if there is a laundry list of other problems with the game!

And if they truly would give me a prequel game that doesn't hold back on the more violent side, I'd absolutely love to have Shimano as the other playable character next to Kazama, as judging by flashbacks and prequels the two were always rivals (if you can call it that) and I've always loved his character. Having a game focus on Dojima, Kazama and Shimano... I'd love it! Oh, and if we get another prequel that goes into the past, I really want them to explain how Kashiwagi got his scar, it should have been a plot point in 0 dammit!

That's what I was hoping they would do since 2013, but then they gave us 0 and I was satisfied :)

I’m for a prequel where you can play as Kazama, Shimano and Kashiwazaki in mulitple chapters. That’d make it more fun. Plus, I want the music to feel authentic with the times with some emotional enka.

It’d also be fun if it included how the yakuza
got involved in wrestling and how they were behind the killing of Rikidozan.

Man, playing as Shimano would be something else. And I love the idea of switching between the characters every few chapters (ala Yakuza 0). Keeps the pacing fresh yet consistent.

While I was never a huge fan of playing as him, I always liked Akiyama. I thought his character was really cool, but I just didn't like his fighting style. I wouldn't mind seeing a separate entry that just followed his character.

Akiyama would be #3 for me, in the series, as he's indeed a cool character and his voice actor does a brilliant job.

Saejima is still my boy though and after Kiryu, I feel he's the strongest (both physically and from a characterisation standpoint) than anyone else in the series (and yes, even more than Majima).

He's also Kiryu's contemporary, basically; went away after being a prominent, "soon-to-be-boss," comes back looking for redemption and the Tiger and Dragon are basically even to each other (hence why one doesn't win over the other, during their fight in 4).

Hoping he has some time in the next title... would be appreciated.

Yeah, Saejima is another thing. I really liked his character and story too, but I didn't like playing as him. It would be really interesting to see these characters' fighting styles done in the Dragon Engine.

A valid and common complaint from gamers playing as him; I adore his fighting style as its challenging and a ton of fun!

On the flipside, I couldn't stand Tanimura's fighting style (another reason why I strongly dislike him), which everybody loves.

Black sheep indeed.

Yeah, I can barely remember Tanimura as a character anyway. His fighting style was interesting (or rather, slightly better animated), but still not very much fun to play.

He got found negative for drugs but declared it a “betrayal” so doesn’t do film or TV anymore supposedly. Very odd.
