General RGG Discussion

No they weren't.

At worst, they are 7/10 games (personally,I give them both 8/10)m

That's not bad or even kinda bad.
agree to disagree then, dead souls i cut some slack cause it was having fun with the story and characters especially with the 2 fanservice, but fist of the north star burned me hard, you have this really fun fast paced combat system and this really absurd but cool source material with loads of memorable characters, and it just paces itself so poorly both gameplay and story wise and worst of all loads the game too much with cameos so your just rushing through story beats with no thematic weight. I wish they would of made the characters actually active in the overall plot or just get rid of them alltogether, I am semi forgiving cause even though souther was totally worthless in the narrative it did at least give us a sick as hell boss fight.

But I dont know, some boss fights were the only highlights of an otherwise messy game for me, and it kills me knowing what it could of been like had it had more put into it, like even with the insane amounts of padding with the wasteland or times it makes you upgrade your car the game is still one of the shortest in the entire franchise and cause the main plot is bogged down in cameos that pretty much bring the story to a dead halt, it feels like the actual plot that was there was so barely present that once you reach the end and see it just speed through these potentially good moments cause they didnt really flesh out anything it really hurt, the villain especially felt like this where we didnt really learn anything about him other than hes really evil, but his boss fight was rad so theres that.

FOTNS rocked. So no, strong disagree there. Combat was excellent and as someone that plat'ed the Japanese version of the game (those requirements...) my opinion on the game is still incredibly positive. Sure the plot wasn't all that great, but I have so many avenues for that I don't really care. I could have done with a few more long battles personally, but that's it. The combat itself carried the game heavily, as did actually having a game that wasn't a pushover difficulty wise. Only stuff I'd change is making the 100% completion less grindy.

And likewise, I really enjoyed Dead Souls for giving us proper playable Majima with his correct personality, Majima Karaoke, badass playable Ryuuji and lots of content. Controls and shooting sucked, but amazingly that doesn't really hamper my fun. Could have used a checkpoint before Amon's first boss fight though.

I don’t think Hokuto Ga Gotoku was that bad, but could have certainly did better. They did very little with Mamiya and Raoh. I hope they do make a sequel to it because I’d like to see a reenactment of when
Raoh dies claiming he has no regrets
, and I would love to see an installment focusing on the Ashura arc, or one based on Souten no Ken. Hell, Kouichi Yamadera, the voice of Akiyama, already plays Kenshiro in that anime to Souten no Ken so that works out.

"Recently, games like Judgment been well-received overseas as well,
i want to think on where the Judgment series is headed next."
He also said that the studio is aware of other successful japanese games like Sekiro,
so they know that there are still a lot of possibilities to do action style games
and the studio shouldnt be afraid of accepting a challenge and try something different.
Also they will listen to all the fan feedback and think about the next approach
but they also cant say yes to every feedback or request because its not good for a studio
to change the direction just because somebody told them to do it.

The director of Nioh 2 also talked about how popular ninjas, samurais, the Sengoku period and games like
Sekiro, Ghost of Tsushima or Nioh are and that there is a big demand for it.

lol. I'd love to see Ishin appear in English one day officially, but I kinda feel they've missed the boat on this one now. But I think more action gameplay at least may well happen sooner or later.

I do at least believe they listen to fan feedback (RGG Online is a good example of this). And with 7 due out pretty soon now, I can't help but wonder what the future of the series holds. I'd love a game available soon after the PS5's launch if possible, or at least performancce patches for all DE games (though I don't see that happening)

well then I guess it is official judgment will be a series going foreword, I just hope 2 doesn't try to overdo the plot to top the first game, judgement 1 i dare say is the first time in the entire series where the escalation to government level conspiracy didn't feel ridiculous but rather a natural progression of events that fit in line with the plot, far better than black monday or the secret of onomichi at any rate. I think ideally a 2nd game for me would simply follow a more traditional serial killer or something in yokohama and the plot itself can be alot lower scale but up the stakes in terms of introducing alot of new characters that could bite it throughout the game. I really think if they iron out some of judgement's kinks like make the style switching actually worth a damn among other things, the 2nd game could really be to the same level as it was from transitioning from yakuza 1 to yakuza 2 (originals not remakes) as long as the story is solid.

Anyway Nagoshi is based so I look foreword to seeing what else he can come up with that might be different, im not the biggest fan of 7's look but i still am hoping it impresses me actually playing it.

Hell, with how popular Sangokushi has been recently (and how huge it was in Japan for the 90s and 2000s), maybe it would be worth the team's while to do a Rot3K game, with all the big players being played by returning voice actors (like they do for all of their spinoffs). Would be an excuse to use Kuroda again and Kiryu's likeness, too.

Otherwise, maybe they can finally do a Nobunaga/Hideyoshi game, with, again, bringing back the old voice crew to do the voices.

Or a Kitabatake game or something... Japan has a rich history!

What we e even more hilarious, would be an Iron Chef game, where there is action (you need to fight people ala the main games), but the big boss events are a fight at the end of each chapter and a battle in Kitchen Stadium.

That would be BEYOND awesome lol

I'd be down for a Rot3K styled game. Mainly because I'm really enjoying Tenchi Wo Kurai II on the Famicom at the moment, but a Yakuza game using those characters would be hilarious fun. I can only imagine who Lu Bu would be though...

I'd certainly love to see a game with a Nobunaga/Yakuza crossover happen, and Sega wouldn't even need to worry about if that'd sell in other regions, as Onimusha and Nioh have shown that period is certainly popular ;)

Disagree big time; the famous article/post involving Jake Adelstein and 3 real-life Yakuza mentions that a VERY similar government-level issue was happening in Japan at that very time and I felt that 3's plot was SUPER realistic.

6 was brilliant; arguably the top manufacturing company in the entire country, embezzled a shit-ton of taxpayers' money, just to build another Yamato and be in cahoots with the Yakuza? Super realistic as well and something that could ruin hundreds of families and an industry, knowing how Japan takes to conspiracies and Yakuza involvement.

And the motivation behind it? Pure Japanese pride and honour (which, in this case, is NOT a good thing lol). Nothing else.

Thought it was fantastic when I completed it and think its even better now, that I reflect more upon it.

Judge Eyes' plot I feel is more universal and can be attributed to any world superpower, not just Japan, whereas the previous 2 are super Japan-centric; that's probably why it was received so well in the west (it too, is a phenomenal plot).

I think they can put another bang-on plot out there; Yokoyama and Nagoshi are brilliant writers and highly innovative, that really call into question modernity and motives/consequences of our decisions/ambitions.

Binary Domain is a great example as well.

EDIT*: BTW, just as pure fluke, I looked up Yamato's (and Musashi's) Wikipedia articles yesterday, out of the blue lol; I LOVE battleships! :D

I left Kiwami 2 yesterday. I did not finish all the bouncer missions, nor all Kiryu skills, nor the cabaret, nor Majima. I don´t know why but coming from 6 everything looks doable but less interesting for me than in that game. Also, I hate Haruka missions, same thing happened in Kiwami 1. Now a Yakuza break until february next year, not sure if I will start Jugdment before starting 3

Some new stuff i guess.

Much like previous games, you can develop and customize protagonist Ichiban Kasuga in different ways.
This time around, you have Life Experience which is divided into six parameters
– Enthusiasm, Intelligence, Cheerfulness, Kindness, Mentality and Stylishness.

According to Sega in a recent press release here’s what each parameter represents:

Enthusiasm – The source of “willingness” and “romance.”
Develops through enthusiastic conduct and doing things with utmost effort.

Mentality – The source of “mental strength” and “concentration.”
Develops through situations that test your courage and emotional strength.

Cheerfulness – The source of “sociability” and “brightness.” Develops through actions that lighten the mood.

Kindness – The source of “broad-mindedness” and “empathy.”
Develops through kind interaction with people, animals, and nature.

Intelligence – The source of “education” and “memory.” Develops through logical suggestion and studying.

Stylishness – The source of “charm” and “character.” Develops through clever exchange and dignified behavior.

You cant accept every job, you cant get all the information from people
and you cant flirt if you dont have the right life experience skills.
You can also upgrade your stats with exams at the Ocean Qualification School. Also all of the side activities
will get you more life experience skills and points.

Sounds like a fun concept. And as I've said in the past, it means more focus on mini games and world interaction, so its great in that sense (or grinding if you read Reddit - and I don't recommend that!)

It kind of feels like Persona to a certain extent with the social links, but I think it works very well with the temporary direction they want to go with the franchise.

As for a Judge Eyes 2, I think we’ll be getting one by maybe 2021 and/or 2022. Maybe they’ll try to get karaoke this time, but of course that seems to be a bigger challenge on an international scale than lets say Marvel and Sony working out Spider-Man.

It doesnt really fit into this topic but i played AI: The Somnium Files last week,
its a japanese detective / cop adventure game but more in the style of a visual novel i guess.
Funny thing is that the english voice actor of the main character is the same as in Judgment
and the whole theme and mood of the story almost feels like it could be a Yakuza game. Its a bit more anime
but it still has a super super serious and brutal main story (it starts slow but it gets deeper and deeper and deeper)
but it also has the typical Yakuza side mission humor.
It feels a bit like Judgment, Deadly Premonition, LA Noire and The Evil Within had a child.

The only thing it doesnt have are fights or any 3D movement. But this game has different paths,
so its not like it doesnt matter what you are doing, there are situations where you have to choose which path you want to take.
There is no shooting or leveling or skills or whatever, its just clicking on things, so its 100% story, not gameplay.
This game is even more dialogue heavy than the Yakuza games. But if you like games like Judgment
just because of the story (with the typical japanese weirdness), you should really give AI: The Somnium Files a try. I think its fantastic.
Without Judgment, Resident Evil 2 and Shenmue 3,
this would be probably my game of the year and i'm not even a fan of "anime games". I couldnt stop playing it.

Some further detail on RGG7 bonds:

Certain characters will respond better to certain mini games, and eventually you unlock bonus side stories that flesh out each character, which is like several RPGs I've played (Kotor does something similar). And since Yakuza side stories are traditionally really damn good, this is a great way of further fleshing each main character out further.

Judgment came out in December 2018 in Japan right? And then June 2019 worldwide.
So Yakuza 7 in July 2020 worldwide? I hope it will be earlier

Yeah its pretty long. I mean, still a thousand times faster than ever before
but i really hope the english team can catch up with the japanese team at some point
and just release it worldwide on the same day.
Other japanese games like Nioh, Nier Automata, Monster Hunter World or Resident Evil
dont have any problem with that.
