When I just did the Playstation blog poll and voted for Shenmue 3 as the most anticipated game of 2019, it reminded me that 2019 will probably be the PS4's last full year as I expect the PS5 to drop at some point in 2020, ending the PS4's life cycle.
Bloodstained was on the list too. Crazy to think that it's still not out, even though its Kickstarter took place around the same time of S3's and it's only a 2-d platformer. However, Bloodstained will release on virtually every system on the market so I guess the development takes a lot of time. I'm really looking forward to it finally coming out.
It's remarkable how many great games the PS4 still has announced for a system which is in its sixth year already. There's Kingdom Hearts 3, Death Stranding, the Last of Us 2 and whatnot. Allthough I immagine TLOU 2 will be kind of a swan song to the PS4, like the first one was for the PS3. TLOU 2 might even drop after the PS5's release as a sort of cross-generation title for both PS4 and 5, like Persona 5 came out on PS3 and 4.
While I'm not interested in TLOU 2 and Kingdom Hearts myself, I understand they're big titles for a lot of people. I'm kind of looking forward to Death Stranding and hope it won't get redirected to PS5 entirely. Also there's smaller titles like Catherine and Death End Request coming out next year and possibly also the Western releases of Yakuza 3 and/or 4 Kiwami.
And I'm not even talking about Shenmue 3 here. So there's still so much stuff to look forward to on PS4... Combine that with my already massive backlog of PS4 games, which means the PS4 will probably keep me busy for at least two years into the PS5's life cycle. If I decide to continue gaming after I'm done with the PS4, the PS5's hardware price will have already dropped by then which is great.
Also this whole thing made me think if or if not I will continiue gaming or just grow out of gaming again, like I did for the generation of PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. In the end it all boils down to Shenmue. What made me buy a PS4 and got me back into gaming was the announcement of S3. If S4 gets announced, I'm definitely going to get the system(s) which it will be on. If not, I might still buy a PS5 at some point down the line but it will not be before the hardware price has dropped to below 300 bucks.
