Random Shenmue III Thoughts

@iyapol found this on Twitter. Street date has been broken! Go underground guys, it's happening!

Wow the release menu is as bad as the trial one.

That... Kinda sucks to be honest. Especially after the epic menus that the originals had. That said, all I care about is the Shenmue experience in the gameplay.

Unfortunately as far as I am aware, there is. You wont be reading a review before you play it.
I wasn't going to read them anyway so it just makes life easier for me 😀

I think a launch day embargo makes sense, personally. You're going to get a sea of positivity from backers starting next week, as 70,000 people receive the game, and they won't be worrying about dumb hypotheticals such as "where does Shenmue III fit in the 2019 gaming landscape?!" and "I can't recommend this to the 'average gamer', can I?!"

Forum-dwelling Hardcore Gamers are obsessed with review scores, so of course there will be a lot of dismissing the game because it gets some 6s and 7s, but it's the voice of the people that matters most. If the feedback from those 70,000 people is positive, the reviews should reflect that. If they don't it means critics are walking out of step with the general public, and their scores will hold less significance. Honestly, I'm not even sure the "average" gamer really cares all that much about review scores (the people who aren't on forums everyday) and the themes of Shenmue III have a wide appeal.

I dont think theres any way to rationalize a day 1 embargo as anything but bad, theres an inherently terrible stigma around it for a reason.
Many games have day 1 embargos. We're just assuming it's a bad thing.

Personally I couldn't care. 18 years of waiting and no embargo will stop my enjoyment.

Starting the "Shenmue I&II vs Shenmue III Comparisons" early.

Menu Screen is similar to what was in the demo. Not the worst thing in the world, but I was hoping for better. It's likely that the music has changed from the serene, meditating ambient sound from the originals. This is the part that I was not looking forward to. Nitpicking the shit out of the game and not being able to help doing so.

Whatever, it is what it is. Looks like round 1 goes to Shenmue I and II

Shenmue I&II- 1
Shenmue III- 0

Let's not

Title screens are something I will always be very critical of, cause so many developers treat it like an afterthought, but its an opportunity to really start your games with a mood setter, it doesnt even take that much too just something simple that sets the mood. Jrpgs I've noticed are the ones that really knock it out of the park, I say a good title screen makes you never want to actually leave the title screen, just a couple ones that really come to mind.

Its a shame shenmue 3 doesnt seem like it really follows that trend.

It's a title screen. It last all of a minutes before you're in the game. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but it's the game that means more than anything to me.
Yeah but that doesn't make them any less great when they bother with it, same with video game covers, its wonderful when they actually have effort to put into them. Its all about the small things sometimes and considering its basically your first impression of the game, to start with something that just nails the tone of what your about to get into, it really gets you ready to jump right in

It also has nothing to do with being old fashioned(if anything im old fashioned for loving them so much since games do it less now), games have been doing it for a long time like this legendary one, I'll never forget how chilling this felt 20 some years ago popping this in for the first time and getting this feeling of unease seeing this start up.

This aint some like major, "maaaan shenmue 3 sucks now" deal, but some of my fondest memories of my favorite games are those first impressions openings and title screens make, and I will forever sing praises to the ones that do it right. And turbo props to ones like FFXV and Xenoblade 1 which without spoiling it, go above and beyond to add a nice addition to the title screens when you beat the game.

Why is the menu Bad @shredingskin
It looks fine to me.
I mean, they could've not used Impact :ROFLMAO:

They had a limited budget and the title screen wasn't a high priority...I get it. I don't think they had a UI specialist on the team, judging from...all the menus in the game. The money was probably better spent elsewhere. Hard to argue with, really. As long as the interface works and isn't too cumbersome.

But, if the title screen affects your enjoyment of Shenmue III then I feel sad for you 😛

Yet loads of good games have had day-1 embargoes. I'm not denying Deep Silver are probably cautious about the reception (there hasn't been a game like this in 18 years) but launch embargo does not mean a bad game.

We don't have any proof that Shenmue 3 will review negatively. There is more evidence to suggest that things are trending positively. Just like sales we don't know till we know.

You guys do realize that the Kickstarter goal was 2 million and with that goal we probably only get a mobile point and click game. Instead we a getting a full Shenmue game experience. RELAX😌 and let's enjoy Shenmue 3. Let's cross those other bridges when its time to.
