Random Shenmue III Thoughts

Okay so... WHY is there a complete guide to palm reading in the Strike Palm Reading and why is that whole place so sad. The place is run out of business and if you ask him about certain members of a certain casino he gets really sad.

But back to the palm reading guide.. Again, why? Connected to a side quest or just a really neat detail? I found it quite fascinating.

Ok, how many fucking martial arts shops do I have to visit to work out what fucking animal style Mr Muscles is using?

I don't even know what Ryo is fucking yapping about. He looks nothing like any animals. He's just waving his limbs around like a muppet.

I love how the name "Mr Muscles" stuck here.

But seriously, any ideas? I've been to 5 martial arts shops now (I didn't even know there were 5) and all the owners are fucking morons. I'm assuming the "correct" answers are 'mantis', 'monkey', 'dragon' and 'bear'. Maybe I have it wrong?
That's what I thought at first too. You have it almost correct, but not quite.

First one is snake

It’s a frustrating exercise as some of the movements and animation don’t describe the correct style/animal.

I'm eager to hopefully finish this damn game this weekend so I can dive into the spoiler section and complain about the story.

I think this is a viable entry in the series, but was really surprised that I found the gameplay and environments to be rather enjoyable but the story and characters to be such a letdown - I was fully expecting the opposite.

At the end of the day, I'm totally immersed and even the grinding has been entertaining. The combat - mostly the input commands - are really frustrating though. How is anyone supposed to learn any of the moves that the entire games economy is centered around? The button inputs are completely random.

Also pretty pissed I'm nearing the end of Niaowu - presumably - and a certain character I've been looking forward to meeting for 15 years still hasn't appeared...

Did anyone else originally think the low swinging one was supposed to be elephant? I mean they were talking about animals, so I didn't think they'd include humans in a frilly parade costume instead of an actual dragon creature.

Yeah, I did haha. Mostly because I thought dragon was too 'obvious' and also because I frankly didn't have a clue what they were talking about. How do any of those movements resemble animals?

After messing up enough times to have to take a second loop around the martial arts stores, and trying different animals I wasn't sure about, I realized their responses are actually clues to whether you're correct or not. (Well, except Snake vs. Mantis)

If you pick an option that is wrong, their response indicates they have no clue what you're talking about. If you pick something plausible, they have a response like "oh, that could be style X" for each one.

If someone gives you a clueless answer for one of the animal styles, you know it's the wrong one.

The game is severely flawed. I would certainly check your expectations regarding last area but I think part of that is a lot of fans had expectations almost inverse of what we got. I think most assumed the plot, characters and story would be the main driving factors in the title with the environments, mini-games and world having to be compromised due to lower budget.

What we got was fully fleshed out, large detailed environments but lack of characterization and story moments, particularly coming off Shenmue 2.

Yes, I’m not sure if it was done deliberately but that and the first animation, players could be excused of guessing the completely wrong animal. It’s odd but the game had a few moments where it really leaves players with little or no guidance which I normally love, but I would be lying if that section after repeatedly getting one or two of the styles confused didn’t end up being frustrating.

If someone gives you a clueless answer for one of the animal styles, you know it's the wrong one.

When guessing
elephant or panda style
yes you do get that indication. However based on the animation and description you receive
Mantis
is a viable style and actually based on his hand motions is frankly more accurate to naked eye, that for me caused the confusion.

The first guy I guessed bear on acted completely clueless, so I think even that depends on which person you're talking to.

The only thing that finally tipped me off about Snake vs. Mantis was the guy at Heaven's Fist saying that he's never seen Mantis style mixed with other animal styles or something to that effect.

Nice detail, I honestly may have missed that or went to different store my first time around.
